Sherborne’s Standing Stones

Sherborne’s Standing Stones

This is just a taster, for a project I’ll publish on in a few weeks time. If I asked you how many ancient standing stones there are in the local area ( either in Sherborne or very, very close by) would you be able to guess at the number? Two? Three?

A month ago, if you’d asked me I would have said maybe five or six. Some of those are quite well hidden. But I would have been quite wrong. There are at least a dozen and possibly as many as twenty. Some of them are extremely well hidden. One I found but is so well hidden I couldn’t find it again when I went back for another look. (Weird!) I’m pulling details together, and now I know what to look for, and where, I’m gathering details and investigating. If you see me riding around my bike, and stopping to furtively peer into hedgerows, you’ll know what I’m up to. You are welcome to join me. There is quite a story to be told, some detective work, some mystery, some spooky folklore, and more. One or two I’m sworn to secrecy on, but I’ll reveal what I can. If you know of any that you think worthy of investigation, please share. I’m pulling together a long piece detailing what I can, and what we might guess as to their purpose and their age. Some are neolithic, I think, some Bronze age, some mediaeval. I have a feeling one or two might be Roman. Some may be figments of my imagination!

To keep you hungry, here’s a picture of one I took just this morning. It’s about 5 ft tall, and has some peculiar shapes carved into it. Watch this space!
