Some notices - Lots going on in and around Sherborne
  1. On 20 September, as part of the Cheltenham Heritage Open Day, the Sherborne Archives will be doing a unique "walk and talk" at the deer course in Lodge park. The deer course, dating to probably the early 17th century or even earlier, maybe, is pretty unique in the country. Sherborne Archives have done some tremendous research and will be presenting their findings, which perhaps even challenge some of the received opinion on deer courses. I think this will be well worth attending. As I understand it, admission for once, to Lodge Park is free. There are other displays also on in the grandstand. Details as follows:
  1. As many of you will know I'm a little personally obsessed with prehistoric/Neolithic long barrows. As part of Cirencester's History Festival there is a talk at the RAU on 25 October, about the recent excavations at the Sisters Longbarrow, a remarkable early Neolithic longbarrow just to the northeast of Cirencester. Details at this link.
  2. Closer to home, on Saturday, 19th September there is a great charity event and fundraiser for Sobell House, which will take place in the Sherborne Social Club. Music from 8:00, with live music from the very lovely Bryony. There will be a significant charity raffle, and details of prizes I will circulate next week. All proceeds go to support Sobell House charity, a fantastic charity well worth our community's support. They provide hospice care to people in our community.Great music, a great cause, and a great raffle too.
  1. This coming Saturday is the Parish Ride and Stride event, things happening in all the local villages that make up our parish. Details here.

Finally, an event that actually happened last month, but it's worth recording. On the 18th of August 1940, Sergeant Pilot Bruce Hancock of the RAF Volunteer Reserve deliberately crashed his plane into a German bomber over Windrush Airfield. He and the occupants of the German bomber were killed. Every year, there is a memorial to the fact that he gave his life for his country and us. It is good that so many village residents attended.
