A Brief Round-Up - Sherborne Reminders
Ancestor Oak

Good news on the Ancestor Oaks. Those planted out around the village in late March are all looking healthy, with leaves well established and no particular dramas to report. Thanks again to everyone who has contributed to this project over the years.

Two developments to look forward to. This summer we plan to mark each tree with a small brass plaque, memorialising the name of the specific individual on the Village War Memorial in whose memory it was planted. Each tree, standing somewhere around the parish, will carry a permanent, personal tribute to someone who died in the Great War or the Second World War. Lest we forget. Details to follow.

The second phase of planting — trees not tied to any particular name, but planted around us— is planned for next winter. More details to follow.

Sherborne Archive Exhibition

On Sunday 1st May, between 11am and 4pm, the Sherborne Archive will be holding an exhibition at the Village Club. The focus is on village history connected to the Sherborne Brook. The Brook Support Group has contributed a history of the mills on the Brook, which we hope you'll find interesting. There will be plenty more from the Archives besides — well worth an hour of your Sunday.

Remember - to misquote some fellow - Heritage is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire.

Windrush Valley Flower Show and Fete

Sherborne is a significant stakeholder and benefits directly from the money raised at this multi-village event. So please see if you can provide as much support as possible and spread the word.

A Summer Survey

If you spot me cycling around the local area with a quizzical expression, a notebook, and my theodolite, I am conducting a detailed re-survey of various points around the parish to a greater degree of accuracy. It will take most of the summer to complete. The results are already pointing towards some new and startling insights into the historical design of this landscape that we live in and treasure — and may surprise a few people. Watch this space.
